Reading Pathways Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) has long been hailed as the creator of the detective fiction genre and celebrated for his macabre contributions to literary Romanticism. Born in Boston, Poe lived a short life fraught with poverty and tragedyâ€"suitable, I suppose, for a romantic. The middle of three children, Poe’s father abandoned his family when he was an infant and his mother died of consumption a year later. He was sent to live with John Allan (who gave him his middle name), a Scottish merchant in Richmond, Virginia. At age sixteen, Poe inherited a substantial sum from his guardian’s uncle and decided to attend the University of Virginia, then in its infancy, to study languages. Soon Poe gambled away his inheritance and quit school. In need of funds he joined the army and served for two years. During that time he published his first book, a forty-page collection of poems that sold almost no copies. He went on to write a total of seventy poems, sixty-six short stories, nine essays, a novel (he died before a second could be finished), and one poorly received play. His death, in keeping with his work, was somewhat mysterious. In his penultimate chapter, he was found roaming the streets of Baltimore, delirious and wearing another man’s clothes. I. Tales of Mystery and Imagination Poe’s tales have been published in various anthological arrangements over the centuries. This modern collection contains all of Poe’s most famous short storiesâ€"“The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Masque of the Red Death.” It also contains a lot of tales you probably didn’t read in grade school, including “The Black Cat,” a story about a murderer trying to conceal his crime in the tradition of “A Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Premature Burial,” which is as horrifying self-explanatory as it seems. Poe’s tales are all very short. My copy, which contains thirty tales, is only four hundred sixty pages. I recommend an illustrated copy, like the Barnes and Noble Leather-bound Classics edition. II. The Complete Poetry of Edgar Allan Poe The most read of Poe’s poems are “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee,” the latter likely inspired by his wife, Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe. Other poems include “City in the Sea,” a foreboding verse about a city ruled by death, and “The Conqueror Worm,” about the inevitability of death. Tales and Poetry can be purchased together in one volume as The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. III. The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym is the only novel Poe completed in his lifetime. A grim adventure, the story follows the title character as he stows away on a whaling ship named the Grampus. Many trials ensue, including shipwreck, mutiny, and an unpleasant encounter with cannibals. The book received mixed reviews, but went on to influence the work of Herman Melville and Jules Verne.  The Folio Society offers a beautiful slipcased collectors edition of this book. Guns fired, smoke lingering in the air, people dying. The American Civil War had a huge impact on the United States. Two compromises took place before the start of the Civil War. These compromises include the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. The Missouri Compromise dealt with the crisis in 1819 over Missouri entering the Union as a slave state. The compromise was â€Å"the first major crisis over slavery, and it shattered a tacit agreement between the two regions that had been in place since the constitution. Under the terms of the agreement, the North would not interfere with slavery in the Southern States, and the South would recognize slavery as an evil that should be discouraged and eventually abolished whenever it was safe and feasible to do so† (Stauffer). The compromise showed the belief that was shared by most of the Founding Fathers and the framers of the Constitution: that slavery was wrong. History of the dust bowl Essay History of the dust bowl Essay The dust bowl was a ecological and human disaster that took place in the southwestern Great Plains region of the United States in the early 1930s, including parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. It was caused by misuse of the land and years of sustained drought. Before farmers came,the region was covered by hardy grasses that held the soil in place in spite of the long recurrent droughts and occasional torrential rains characteristic of the period. However in the thirty years before World War I, a large number of homesteaders settled in the region, planting wheat and row crops and and raising cattle. Both these land uses left the land exposed to the danger of erosionby the winds that constantly sweep over the sea. Beginning in the early thirties, the region suffered a period of severe droughts, and the soil began to blow away. The organic matter, clay, and slit in the soil were carried great distances by the winds, in some cases darkening the sky as far as the Atlantic coast, and sand and heavier materials drifted against houses, fences, and barns. IN many places eight to ten centimeters of soil were blown away. Millions of hectares of farmland became useless, and hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their lands, and homes. The Dust Bowl lasted about a decade. Beginning in 1935, intensive efforts were made both by federal and state goverments to develop adequate programs for soil conservation and for rehabilitation of the Dust Bowl. The measures taken have included seeding large areas in grass; three year rotation of wheat, sorghum, and lying of fallow; the introduction of counterplowing, terracing, and strip planting; and in areas of greater rainfall, the planting of long shelter belts of trees to break the force of the wind. Dry spells in the 1950s, 60s, and the late 70s were responsible for reccurences of dust-bowl blowing in the region. .

At the time in which John was voicing his opinions many different issues were in the hot seat. A major concern was the slavery in 1838. The public was in an outcry over the touchy issue. John, of course, did not hesitate to voice his true thoughts. Other concerns such as the concurrent majority and the rights of the States were among many of Johns concerns. To truly understand the opinions of this man we must first of all look at the reasons for his positions. Slavery was without a dought the biggest issue in the 1830's. There were many, many attempts to stop the use of slaves among our society. To the majority of the population that this was a positive movement and a step in the right direction. To Mr. Calhoun this was not the case. He can be quoted as saying: ?Many in the South once believed that slavery was a moral and political evil. That folly and delusion are gone. We see it now in its true light, and regard it as the most safe and stable basis for free institutions in the world?. This idea is very complex and needs to be evaluated carefully. In a different light John has a very good point. No one liked the idea of slavery. It seems morally inadequate and wrong. John believed that it set a pathway for free institution. Resulting form slavery he believes that society learned the basic skills for free institution. In actuality he did not necessarily believe that slavery was a good thing. John simply believed that it brought about a bet ter awareness for our population and it's leaders to grow upon. As the days on the calendar went by the issues of the world started to change. In 1850 many people were on the topic of congruent majority government. The idea was to replace mob dictatorship or numerical majority. Calhoun was opposed to both mob dictatorship and numerical majority. He felt that both of these forms of government did not represent the people properly. ?Such a government, instead of being a true and perfect model of the people's government, that is, a people self-governed, is but the government of a part, over a part, --the major over the minor?. This leads directly into the strong positive energy towards a congruent majority government. John believed that a congruent government was the indispensable element of forming a well-run constitutional government. He felt that it would create a balance of power among the people. The main and most important idea that came along with this level of government was the idea of compromise instead of force. This would become the cons ervative principal. Calhoun was one hundred and fifty percent behind this idea. He felt that it would help the people of the minority. This mean of government would allow for the minority to be heard. Also occurring in the 1950's was a discourse on the constitution and government of the United States. Calhoun felt very immovably that the States did not receive their suitable rights. He felt that the Constitution was merely concerned about their own prosperity and well being. ?We the people of the United States of America, mean the people of the several States of the Union, acting as free, independent, and sovereign States. Within many of John's strong ideas he expresses that not at any time did the States give the slightest authority to it's delegates to form a national government. This sums up his opinions in a nutshell. The States were not being heard. Their wants, needs, and concerns were being pushed aside. Sensibility was understood as a capacity intimately connected with the physical nature of nerves. Essential to its existence was its operation on the body as well as the mind. Thus a propensity to blush and weep might be taken as evidence that the weepers, full of sensibility, loved their neighbours as themselves. (Spacks 141) During the Romantic period, the Sensibility movement began: as a result, the "conduct of private affections, charity, education, sympathy, genius, honour, and even the use of reason†¦became political statements" (Jones 13). Romantic Sensibility essentially moralized the enactment of sensitivity towards others (Spacks 127), arguing that empathetically-based relationships bring individuals together to form a unified, respectful, and moral social sphere. Key characteristics of the movement's literary adaptation include "anti-rationalism, a focus on emotional response and somatized reactions (tears, swoons, deathly pallor), a prevailing mood of melancholy, fragmentation of form, and set-piece scenes of virtue in distress" (Manning 81). The relationship between the novel of Romantic Sensibility and the Gothic novel is worth further academic inquiry as, similar to the genre of the Gothic, there is often a tendency in novels of Romantic Sensibility to "play with excess and arousal (wit h all the connotations of uncontrollable sexual excitation implied)" (Manning 90).

The person i met in Heaven

I stood there, motionless. Shock had taken over my body like a disease. I started shaking; my body going into panic mode. I collapsed, tears streaming down my face. I couldn't move. I just sat, looking, staring. I screamed, and then I was in total darkness. This was the last memory going through my head before†¦ I opened my eyes. As I sat up to see where I was, I felt a cool breeze against my cheeks. I saw that I was lying in the middle of a massive field with trees surrounding it. I knew where I was straight away. I had been thinking about this place for thirty years. I looked around, this place was the same, but, it just had a softer atmosphere then I remembered. The sky seemed to glow. Almost like a dream. Except, this wasn't a dream, this was real. I got up to look around, and then suddenly I heard a voice. â€Å"Well, well, well. You made it then?† the voice laughed. â€Å"Never could've imagined that!† I spun around. â€Å"Katy?† I stood there, staring at her. I had dreamed of this moment since I was a teenager. I had planned every word, every movement, but now, no words ran through my head. Just emotions and memories. â€Å"Are you alright? Looks like you've seen a ghost,† she chuckled. â€Å"God, I crack myself up!† â€Å"Am I dreaming?† â€Å"Nope, you're in Heaven! To be honest, I'm surprised you made it!† The atmosphere cooled, and it felt like old times again. â€Å"What do you mean? I was more angelic than you!† We both laughed, then, silence. It suddenly felt awkward. â€Å"I'm so sorry Katy. I never realised you were so upset with your life. I hated myself; I wanted to see you, to talk to you. I – I†¦Ã¢â‚¬  My words came out so quickly, rushing out of my mouth. The sky darkened from a sunny blue to a deadly black, and pictures of the past seemed to appear all around us. â€Å"Lauren, shut it! What are you? Forty-Five? And you're still going on about that? It wasn't your fault, okay? Stop blaming yourself. I've been watching over you for thirty years and there are so many things you could've done. You turned down so many opportunities to meet new people and†¦Ã¢â‚¬  she paused, â€Å"you just had no confidence in yourself. And that's because of me.† She looked as defenceless as she did when her parents died in that car crash when she was fourteen. Being in care had messed her up a bit, and I knew that she had been on anti – depressants for a while. But wouldn't anyone be like her in her situation? I had never expected her to kill herself. I sat down next to her, then, finally breaking the silence, I spoke. â€Å"Why?† The word shot through the air like a dart. I looked at Katy. â€Å"I know you were upset about your parents but†¦Ã¢â‚¬  I stopped to think about what I was saying. Scared of what her reaction might be if I said the wrong thing. â€Å"You seemed to be managing fine† I said. â€Å"I don't know. I just†¦ I felt like I could manage. I stopped taking my tablets, and then everything seemed to go downhill. I thought about what happened quite a lot. I blamed myself for everything. I knew I shouldn't've, but I did. I got more and more depressed, taking everything so seriously. Like, that time when Louise Painsley called me a ‘useless whore', just because I messed up in our music performance?† I nodded, not quite sure of what to say, but before I had time to think, she continued. â€Å"Well, everything just used to hit me like a punch in the stomach. Every little thing. It sounds stupid, but it just built up. I couldn't manage anymore, I just wanted to go. To be with my family. And away from†¦ everything.† She looked at me. â€Å"I'm sorry that I didn't speak to you. I just didn't want to bother you with all my worries. I just knew what I wanted to do, so I did it. But deep down you knew that, so why did you mess up your life over it? I just don't get it Loz. You were my best mate. Why would it have been your fault?† I thought about my answer, but to be honest, I had no idea. Finally, I just said everything that I felt. â€Å"All these years I had just thought about you, and the fact that I was having fun when you were gone. It just didn't feel right. I suppose that's okay for the first few months right? But I know I shouldn't've dragged it out. I just didn't feel right. I felt like I was betraying you in some way.† We looked at each other in a knowing way. In a way that meant not to carry on with the conversation. That it was finished and didn't need to be mentioned again. I sighed with relief. It felt like a massive weight had been lifted from my chest. I grabbed Katy's hand and we walked around the place that I had been thinking about for thirty years. The place where me and Katy spent most our time. A massive field with trees surrounding it. I felt a cool breeze against my cheeks. I felt at peace with myself. This was my heaven, and nobody could ever take it away from me again.

Human services consist of and utilize a number of disciplines. Mediation is usually defined as a process in which an impartial third party helps parties resolve a dispute or plan a transaction by assisting their negotiations. Approaches, however, can vary considerably. Many mediators tend to use the same approach regardless of the situations of the parties. But others are flexible and do whatever will work. Each approach has potential advantages and disadvantages. The individual’s behavior would provide insight into what makes them comfortable; so there want be a need for barriers. Advocates and mediators recog nize this type of closure and are specialized in learning how to gain the individuals trust. Advocates and mediators also distinguish how an individual lives with one another and can determine a lot about their lifestyle. Human services act as advocates as well when trying to determine any needs that have not been facilitated for clients. The needs could be great but it is up to human services to determine whether it s assistance at home, medical and school issues for their children if they have any because unfortunately when adults are having problems, they do reflect on their children. Children are easiest to please but when their parents are having issues at home it can be emotionally offensive to the children if the parents aren’t careful, going to counseling and getting their children involved could help determine the cause and hopefully find a solution. In conclusion I have discovered that mediators and advocates provide a strong backbone for the different disciplines that encompass human services.
